What would you do? Truth in politics, truth in parenting.

On Tuesday we cast our vote for governor, sheriff and assorted other officials. There’s a lot of mud-slinging that goes on. Of course, anybody can play with the facts to make them support their position, but sometimes there is truth in it.  It got me thinking about how our responses might be different if the candidates were more open and honest with us.

For example, what if your candidate said, “I don’t agree completely with their position, but I’m thinking about taking campaign contributions from X organization because I need the money to help me win the election.”  How would you respond to that?  Would you consider giving him/her more money?  Do you think that candidate’s honesty and desire to act in integrity could change your mind? start a movement?  We are disillusioned and disappointed in our leaders. How would more openness, (transparency, if you will) make a difference?

This kind of thoughtful and open communication with, and from, your teen can make a big difference in the results you see as they grow and mature.  How would outcomes be different if your child

*  told you the truth instead of trying to cover something up?
*  shared that he is confused and wants your guidance?
*  asked for your help to fix a mistake?

Life and parenting would look and sound very different. There would be less fear and disappointment, more empathy, cooperation and willingness to change — on both sides.

Remember that YOU have the power to create this.  YOU want to be the one they turn to when there’s something important to talk about. YOU are the most important resource and support they will ever have.

I’m really excited about a new program I’m creating for you, to help with exactly these concerns. So keep your eyes open for details over the next month.
